ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My work is shaped by my background in art history. Studying the masters was a wonderful school for forming an artistic sensibility. It taught me about visual poetry and intensity of expression. What I aim to do in my own work is to bring this sensibility into modern life, examining same-sex desire and the breakdown of democratic norms.

Light is critical to everything I do. That is why some of my pieces are transfers on gold or on mother of pearl, and others are handmade transparencies. Light seems to emanate from the image itself. Touch is equally important. Sometimes I put images in cases, inviting the viewer to pick up the art and handle it. In other pieces, I play with texture and thickness. Touch completes the picture.

Increasingly, I have been working on artists’ books, unique, handcrafted editions that explore the creative possibilities of the book as art. Holding a book in your hand is so different from seeing something hang on a wall. Every project is a new discovery.

The portfolio and gallery titles were inspired by Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Linger a while. Build your own fantasy.
